Here is what is considered a homestead in Texas:
- Rural: 200 acres (family); 100 acres (single)
- Urban: 10 acres w/ improvements (must be adjacent lots)
Urban = several factors to consider:
- Does a city provide electric, sewer, water, gas to the property?
- Is it located in the city limits?
- Is it served by police and fire protection?
Homesteads are protected from forced sale by creditors.
BUT, you can place a lien on your homestead in certain ways and your home can be sold if you default.
